8 Ways to Beat the Afternoon

Slump and Boost Your Energy!

We’re all humans and we’ve all been there. If you find yourself crashing and hitting a brick wall halfway through your day, you're not alone. Many of us start off the day energized enough but then struggle by lunchtime and afterward unless we are lucky enough to get a second wind.

This is something I’ve battled with for many years. Holding down a full time job and being a mom to 2 beautiful children means I start my days super early. Getting the kids ready for school, my husband ready for work, breakfast on the table, the washing in the machine and then onto the school run, all before 9am! I feel like super woman.

Unfortunately, as soon as that slump kicks in though I’m a whole different person! The mood swings creep out, the lack of concentration follows, then onto the feeling of wanting to curl up into a ball.

After many different tests, theories and experiments I’ve managed to come up with this list of the top 8 ways for you to beat the afternoon slump.

If you're hitting an afternoon slump more often than you'd like, try one of these easy ways to beat it and take the rest of your day back, I promise you won’t regret it!

Eat your breakfast

It’s dubbed the most important meal of the day for a reason! Getting your body fuelled up for the day ahead is extremely important if you’re to start the day right and hope for maximum use of your energy.

Hit the gym

Hitting the gym during lunch for a bit of light aerobic exercise can ward off fatigue and get you energized for the rest of the day. If you just don't have the time to get there, you can do some exercises right at your desk at work. Known as "deskercise," there are plenty of free resources online that contain examples you could do at your job.

Get up and move

If exercising at work just isn't your thing, you can sneak in some physical activity in other ways. For example, don't just email a reply to your coworker on the other side of the office. Get up and walk down there to give your reply or discuss the issue in person or volunteer to walk the mail down.

Take a real break

If you're tired, switch gears. Do something else besides your work for a few minutes, such as a crossword puzzle. This will give your mind and body a true break from what you've been doing all morning.

Don't reach for sugar

Sugar may seem like the afternoon slump answer, but in reality, it's a temporary fix that will cause the slump to feel worse once it wears off. Keep healthy snacks nearby if you need a food fix mid-afternoon, and avoid those candy bars or sugary drinks.

Keep yourself hydrated

Being dehydrated can make you tired, and it's easy to end up in this state. Drink more water by swapping out that midday soda for a bottle of H2O instead.

Make a quick call

Make a five-minute "thinking of you" phone call to someone you want to reach, such as a friend, family member or old coworker. This type of call will help you stay connected and reinvigorate you for the rest of your day.

Try Skywater Revive

By far my favorite (and tastiest) point on the list! I’d been hearing great things about Skywater Revive and when a colleague of mine brought some into the office I just had to try it. Safe to say that the results were astonishing and I had no hesitation in ordering a batch for myself and my family.

That Much Needed Energy Boost! Improve Your Energy Before a Workout.

After compiling this list I had my good friend and personal trainer, Chris, check them out and it was great to hear that Skywater came in high up on his list of things to do to increase energy before a workout! I just had to include his list here as it goes hand in hand with what I've mentioned and really emphasises how something so simple can have so many benefits.

Increase your Magnesium Intake

This was high up on Chris's list of energy boosters. Apparently magnesium is responsible for more than 300 biochenical reactions in the body including the break up of glucose into that much needed energy. His recommendations for getting that magnesium hit? A handful of hazlenuts, more fish, and Skywater Revive!

Don't skip breakfast

I've said it already myself and Chris didn't hesitate to agree! Make sure you eat this important meal.

Get the party started

Chris is a massive advocate of music to get the juices flowing before and during a workout. Whether it's rap, techno, pop or dance listenning to music has been shown to increase endurance by up to 15 percent due to your mind becoming distracted (Brunel University).

Get some caffeine

Caffeine is by far one of the most popular energy sources. Offering a quick (albeit) temporary burst of mental alertness and energy, caffeine can be a quick way to get a boost.

Get your Vitamin B

This super vitamin is VITAL in the transfer of energy from food into your body. If you're low on Vitamin B you'll feel fatigued and lethargic, leaving you unmotivated.

Drink more water and stay hydrated

Probably a given but apparently something that is neglected so often. Chris now recommends SkyWater to all of his clients as it is packed full of electrolytes that hydrate and provide that much needed boost of energy whilst keeping you hydrated. Another reason for SkyWater Revive? It covers many of the items listed above in one convienent energizing shot! SkyWater has 100MG of Natural Caffeine from Green Coffee Bean, 40mgs of Vitamin B6 and 540mcgs of Vitamin B12.

So you heard it here first! Whether you're trying to beat the afternoon slump or get a boost of energy before a workout, don't drag yourself through your afternoon any longer. I highly recommend you visit the Skywater Revive website and order your bottle today!

SkyWater Revive is formulated to help give you a boost of natural energy, support your immune system, and hydrate you in order to help you power through your busy day without the edginess associated with typical energy drinks.*

USE: Green Tea is one of the most ancient super foods. It has a combination of caffeine and theanine to give you energy, while balancing the nervous system and avoiding the jitters that can come with drinking typical energy drinks. There have been extensive studies on the herbs effectiveness to help ease mental fatigue, raise metabolism for weight loss, treat high cholesterol, boost the immune system, and even prevent cavities.*

HISTORY: The discovery of green tea dates back to 2737 BC, when Chinese Emperor Shennong accidentally drank water that had a tea leaf boiled in it. Green tea was an expensive commodity for thousands of years until European traders were introduced to the pleasing herb.

USE: Rhodiola Rosea is classified as an adaptogen because of its ability to increase resistance to chemical, biological, and physical stressors according to the needs of your body. It can also help improve energy levels, enhance memory, fight depression, and combat drowsiness and fatigue.*

HISTORY: Rhodiola was discovered by the Greeks in 77 A.D. The Vikings depended on the herb to enhance their physical strength and endurance, while Chinese emperors sent expeditions to Siberia to bring back “the golden root? for medicinal preparations. The people of central Asia considered a tea brewed from Rhodiola rosea to be the most effective treatment for cold and flu.

USE: In general, Vitamin B helps with the process your body uses to get or make energy from the food you eat and helps form red blood cells. Vitamin B6 plays a key role in the production of amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. Vitamin B12 is involved in a variety of important bodily functions including the production of amino acids and the processing of carbohydrates into energy. Niacin (Vitamin B3) plays a key role in converting fats, proteins, carbohydrates and starches into usable energy.

HISTORY: Roger J. Williams and R.W. Truesdail discovered Vitamin B5 in 1931. Its scientific name (pantothenic acid) originates from the Greek word “pantos? meaning “everywhere,? as it can be found throughout all living cells.

Authors report "It seems that a small dose (100 mg) of caffeine is enough to produce small-to-moderate size improvements in stimulus response, improved target identification, and reductions in false alarms. Both the lack of a speed-accuracy tradeoff for 100 mg of caffeine and now replicated with 200 mg from authors previous work indicates that a small and moderate dose of caffeine alters participants’ central information-processing capabilities and does not merely facility movement production." Study demonstrates positive confirmation of the effectiveness of a 100 mg dose of caffeine on mental performance, sustained attention, mental energy.1

Subjects taking Rhodiola Rosea completed a 6-mile time trial significantly faster than placebo, demonstrating that Rhodiola Rosea improves endurance exercise performance. 2

A statistically significant improvement in these tests was observed in the treatment group taking Rhodiola Rosea during the first two week period. No side-effects were reported. These results suggest that Rhodiola Rosea can reduce general fatigue under certain stressful conditions.3
